O'Neil Printing: Long-time community stewards
Bykerry Duff
After more than 100 years in business, O'Neil Printing in Phoenix still is providing printing and communications solutions to valley businesses. President Tony Narducci says the company's longevity lies in giving back to the community and offering company ownership to employees. He also credits the company's commitment to reinventing itself over the years and modernizing its processes to maintain its competitive edge and satisfy customers. O'Neil's most recent innovation was changing its entire printing process to green technology. They now print on newer, fully automated presses that use less inks and chemicals than conventional presses and they recycle and reconstitute 95 percent of their solvents. The printing company also is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, which means they recommend FSC paper containing post-consumer recycled content to help save trees and water and prevent the generation of solid waste. Finished products are packed in 100 percent recyclable cartons and delivered by vehicles that use bio-diesel instead of petroleum-based fuels. The company's 75 employees also support the green movement. More than half of them use alternate modes of transportation to get to work. "We share all our knowledge and know-how with our clients and invite them to think green, design green, and print green" Narducci says. "We even produced a green brochure to help them understand the innovations of green technology." William "Bucky" O'Neil started O'Neil Printing in 1908. Initially, he called it the O'Neil Letter Shop because it specialized in the sale of typewriters and secretarial services to businesses in downtown Phoenix. He added early printing innovations to his business a few years later, a multigraph machine in 1914 and a mimeograph machine in 1925. Those set the stage for O'Neil to be on the cutting edge of printing technologies and innovations. The company changed its name to O'Neil Printing Inc. in the 1970s. In 1996 it became an employee-owned company instead of a family-owned business. O'Neil's revenue in 2008 was just under 16 million. "Our company structure is different than most," Narducci says. "The company is owned by employees through an Employee Stock Ownership plan, which means they have an invested interest in our success and what we do for clients beyond their paycheck. We are a company that cares about our client's success. From the top down our philosophy is: "If we are good stewards of resources and time, and take care of clients with exceptional service, we will be successful." O'Neil printing received three Best of Category Awards and 15 Awards of Excellence in January at the seventh annual Printing Industries of Arizona Print Excellence Awards competition.
